A library must be designed for the needs of its community. It should not be crammed into space that only accommodates materials, but should address the needs of its users and other services. Libraries are places that can create the love of reading, life-long learning, and reflect the values and spirit of a community.

That's what Mrs. Geraldine Russell hopes the Jack Russell Memorial Library will continue to do for the people it serves. Mrs. Russell seeks to create an institution that conveys the values that unite Hartford and preserve the community as the wonderful place it is to raise a family, work, and live.

The catalyst for the project was a $2 million gift from Mrs. Geraldine Russell in memory of her husband, Jack. The Library Board voted to name the new facility - The Jack Russell Memorial Library. The new Library will serve Hartford and the surrounding communities.

The Library Board has asked the City Council to join with them to make this new facility happen. The Library Board has proposed providing half of the facility's construction cost through Mrs. Russell's $2 million donation, its $1 million in Trust Fund savings, and a $2 million capital campaign.

Currently, we are underway with a $2 million capital campaign with the theme, "Your Library...Your Doorway to Discovery!" The Campaign will seek support from the Library family, business, industry, financial institutions, foundations, and individuals.

All donations are tax-deductible and will be placed in a restricted account managed by the Hartford Area Foundation. This account will be maintained by the Foundation until such time as funds are needed for construction, equipment or furnishings for the new Library.

As you think of the new Jack Russell Memorial Library, think of what it will be --

  • Think about what it can do to teach both children and adults the skills that will be needed for life in the 21st Century.
  • Think about it as a place where you can go to find answers.
  • Think about it as a place where you can discover new doorways to information.
  • Think about it as a place you can go to pursue your interests.
